About Fox Island State Wildlife Area

Fox Island State Wildlife Area (SWA) is located in Adams County, Colorado, along the South Platte River corridor, approximately 15 miles northeast of downtown Denver. Spanning nearly 1,500 acres, this protected natural area preserves a mix of wetland, riparian, and grassland habitats, which support an impressive diversity of wildlife species, especially migratory birds. Established in 1992, Fox Island SWA was created to provide critical habitat for waterfowl, raptors, and songbirds while offering public access for wildlife-dependent recreation. The area features marshes, ponds, and oxbows formed by the river's meanders, supporting species such as great blue herons, American bitterns, bald eagles, and numerous waterfowl. It is a favored destination for birders, anglers, photographers, and hikers seeking tranquil natural surroundings near the metro Denver area. Recreational activities include fishing for channel catfish and largemouth bass in the ponds, hiking along short interpretive trails, and seasonal wildlife viewing during migrations. The area has limited developed amenities, maintaining its quiet, natural character, and visitors are encouraged to observe wildlife respectfully. Its location near urban areas makes Fox Island SWA especially valuable as an accessible natural refuge. While there are no developed campgrounds on site, nearby regional parks and open spaces provide additional outdoor opportunities. The management focus remains on habitat conservation and providing quality wildlife viewing experiences while protecting waterfowl nesting areas and sensitive riparian zones. Its proximity to Denver International Airport also makes it a convenient spot for short nature outings amid an otherwise developed landscape.
